| This is a refined "American Purple Top" type with smooth roots. Like most rutabagas, the flesh is dense, rather hard and crispy raw. Sweet, mild flavor. I like them peeled and sliced thin. I don't usually cook them. 'Gilfeather', a white heirloom rutabaga (or turnip?) is similarly dense, but a little sweeter. It doesn't seem to grow as fast as 'Joan'.
These hold pretty well in the garden in fall in our climate, even in wet weather. If you like a more tender fall vegetable, try 'Just Right' turnips, which hold pretty much like a rutabaga in the garden in cold fall weather. |
