'Hot Portugal' Peppers |

| Sub-Category: |
Hot

| Sub-Category 2: |
| | Description: |
Hot pepper. Tall, erect plants bear 5- to 8-inch by 1-inch, pepper-flavored, shiny, green fruit maturing to fiery-hot, deep-crimson. One of the best hot peppers around. This sweet and spicy pepper is long with thin flesh and ripens quickly in shorter growing seasons. Best when allowed to ripen red on the plant. These peppers are great fresh: sautéed in soups, stews, and added to stir fries for some heat. Dried and crushed, these peppers make some of the best red chile flakes around.
If you happen to grow Jimmy Nardello's Sweet Italian Pepper, please make sure you label your plants well--Hot Portugal is a twin in every way except the hotness!

| 2007 was the first year I grew 'Hot Portugal'. The performance was incredible as there were still peppers on the plant ready for harvesting a week before Thanksgiving. Plants were shaded from intense afternoon sun and set against a south facing wall. Peppers were moderately hot. Tolerant of drier sandy soil. |

| I tried growing these last year. Although they were prolific, they took over 5 weeks to ripen. I had lots of green peppers, but very few red. I'll stick with Cayennes, Jalapenos, and Hungarians Wax. More bang for the buck. |

| Grew for many years. Very dependable. Tall plant yields a lot of peppers if picked regularly. Very variable in how hot they are from one pod to the next. |

| I've grown Hot Portugal for a number of years and its aways performed well. The cool, wet summer of 2004 gave a smaller yield of smaller peppers that were so hot (not what I expected) that we couldn't enjoy them. The plants resisted early blight. |
