Planted 1 row of seeds on May 9. Germination was low; perhaps eaten by birds or washed away (one came up about 2 feet away). Because of germination rate, yield was / is low.

I grow a carrot mix for market and cosmic purple does so well the bunches have more purple than orange or yellow. They are fast growers and reach a nice size. There are carrots of a deeper purple but this one really is my favorite as it is. You can keep the color by roasting in a baking dish with a little butter and tiny drizzle of honey. I have had some problems with splitting from this variety so watch them as they get big and pull.

Did not produce very large carrots (could be my fault, my soil is not ideal though they were fertilized). I preferred the flavor of my sweet Nantes Long. The purples were more bitter than sweet. They tasted just fine cooked and even kept a bit of the purple if not cooked too long. I had to be careful when brushing the dirt off or the purple skin came off too.

On the plus side, this was my first gardening experience and I simply cleaned the rocks out of the soil, put some seeds in the ground, and came back four months later to find carrots. Some of them were really stunted from this treatment, and none of them were very big. Still for the amount of work that I put into them I would have got nothing out of a less hardy vegetable. I would recommend them to any beginning gardener who wants to be certain to get at least something out of minimal effort. Perhaps an experienced gardener would have produced larger carrots so I cannot really say anything about the yield based on my experience with it being somewhat low. On the minus side they seemed much more red than purple. The tops were purple, but as you went down the carrot it was really a red carrot. I think I will try the deep purple carrot next time to grow a fully purple carrot. Also its taste was nothing special.

What fun! What color! A simple scraping off of dirt with a nylon scrubber keeps the beautiful purple color intact. Quite a contast to the deep orange "inside". Several of the plants did not produce carrots, but went to seed instead. I'm going to save them, but I doubt I'll get satisfactory results. Overall, a carrot worth growing, and one that few people (at least around here) have seen.

A BEAUTIFUL carrot! Harvested as baby carrots along with Coreless Nantes and Yellowstone. Cosmic Purple was the top choice for eye appeal and taste. Sweeter by far! Easy to grow, easy to pull.
