In addition to being sold as a green, this plant is sold as a winter cover crop for mild-winter climates. Sown in fall, it requires little care here, and develops very sweet, mild leaves. My plants, grown on less than ideal soil, were a little spindly, but the leaves were very good. Use in salads when small, cooked when larger.
When over-wintered, it bolts in about February in Central California, at about the right time to attract bees to early-blooming stone fruits. I stuck bouquets of the flowers in the trees. The bright yellow flowers are also edible, and fun to eat while out in the garden when there isn't much else ready to eat. They are sweet and would make a nice garnish for salads, too. |
