| We love eggplant and grow many varieties. Waimanalo is our all-time find. It is worth growing for the sheer beauty of the plant alone. It is incredibly vigorous from seed to mature plant. Its seeds are the first to germinate and its plants are the first to flower. Its large flat leaves fan out to form a pagoda-like structure. The color of the leaves is variable by plant, from deep purple to sage tinged with purple. Its fruit is excellent, a larger version of Ping Tung. I bought my seeds from the University of Hawaii Seed Lab. Waimanalo is open-pollinated, but UHSL also sells a hybrid of Nita and Waimanalo, which is reported to be even more productive and disease-resistant. Check out the UHSL website. Its prices are low, shipping is a pittance and it has some interesting offerings. |

| The flesh of this open-pollinated eggplant is incredibly delicious, flavorful and tender. It is perfect for asian dishes and pasta a la norma. I had to peel the larger eggplants (after they lost their shine). They can grow to 16 inches long. I harvest them at 6 inches and they are delicious. The plants were prolific all summer... very tolerant of high heat and humidity. They were not seedy, compared to other eggplants that I have grown. I purchased my seeds from Sand Hill Preservation Center. |

| Awesome. Reliable, easy to grow, super resistant to all kinds of diseases including nematoes and bacterial wilts.
Super productive, pumps out fruit year round here in our frost free climate.
Flavor is far superior to any other long purple eggplant I have ever eaten.
When compared to the long skinny Asian hybrids such as Millionaire, Burpee Hybrid, Ichiban and Neon on the basis of both flavor and productivity, it leaves them all in the dust!! |
