Open pollinated. A sturdy plants that can approach 2 feet produces large, tender, dark green, triangular leaves with red-tinged stalks. It is named for its thorny clusters of seed. This plant tends to bolt in hot weather; sow seeds in mid-winter for an early spring harvest or late summer or early fall for fall harvests and for overwintering.
