Produces good melons, but the vines can run pretty far--20 feet or a little more. Mine usually don't set the first melons until a few weeks after the first blossoms appear, and fertilizing myself hasn't worked. However, they have produced a crop every year, even through some dry summers with limited water. Use the nearest tendril to determine the ripeness of any given melon; when it's dry, wait another week or so and it should be ready. Thumping and checking the color don't work very well. I've had them mature at anywhere from soccer ball to basketball-sized or a bit larger. |

Great outside appearance. Not very sweet and not very much yield. |

I started seeds from the Landreth Seed Co. The germination rate was excellent and the seedlings were vigorous. I grew the red flesh variety and it was wonderful -- great taste and texture. The plants were hardy and even withstood a light frost late in the season.
I had the treat of watching the moon and stars grow on the fruit from early on, and the foliage was speckled with little stars as well. |
