I am not an experienced grower of watermelons, but these have done as well for us as anything. We get hot enough weather (usually) for watermelons, but not really long enough, so the short season varieties are a must. Not the best watermelon I have ever had, but sweet and tasty, and hey! I can grow it. Very similar to Small Shining Light (smaller but more numerous melons on Sugar Baby) but Small Shining Light is a MUCH better keeper - I have found Sugar Baby must be picked at just the right moment or they will rot on the vine.

Within Tucson, Arizona, Sugar Baby watermelons performed exceptionally well. Disease resistance/vigor and taste outperformed other cultivars I have tried in the past. When I wait between 30-60 days from fruit set I am always rewarded with red sweet juicy flesh. The plant does not overextend itself in the heat as many others do. My only concern with the fruit was that the rind almost always cracks when I start to cut it- perhaps this is because I put my watermelons in the refrigerator before I cut them. All things considered, Sugar Baby will be my gold standard of a watermelon to judge all others by.

One of the oldest "icebox" type melons, but still quite popular among home gardeners. It is a good producer of small melons. Taste is not quite up to Crimson Sweet types but better than many of the older "picnic " types. It is small enough to trellis.
