A nice early watermelon with good flavor. Would recommend to a person that is just trying to grow watermelon for the first time.

This summer (2009) had a very short season of hot weather. June & half of July was cool & rainy. The Yellow Doll produced nice sized, approx 9-inch melons that were consistently good, over a long period...they were sweet, had thin rind, and not as many seeds as Sugar Baby & Golden Crown. Long Island summer climates are unpredictable and I rarely had good results in the past. I managed to get 1-2 melons per vine. Good idea to plant more seeds as some seedlings did not survive at first.

Did not perform very well for me. After reading all of the good reviews, I guess my expectations were too high. I won't grow this one again.

This is the best "icebox" type melon that I have attempted. It is early to ripen, vigorous, and productive. Flavor is superb. Sweeter than most other melons.

Always a challenge to get a watermelon to ripen here, where the actual "good" growing season is barely 90 days, Yellow Doll has been a dependable producer. I still dream of the very first melon we harvested, it was that delicious. Haven't quite matched that since, but the fickle weather more than the variety is to blame. Although we never get many big ripe melons (maybe 1-2), at least we get some!

I don't usually grow hybrids, but this one is just too good. Watermelons bred for short seasons typically sacrifice size, flavor, or yield - and while "Yellow Doll" is relatively small at 6-8 pounds, the yield & flavor are outstanding. The yellow flesh is juicy, so crisp you can break it, with high sugar content, and no hollow heart or cracking. The vines, while smaller than those of full-size watermelons, are extremely vigorous, and generally yield at least 2 melons per vine. In my coolest summer, half the melons still managed to ripen. My only complaint would be its storage ability, since the outstanding quality does not last long after harvest without refrigeration.

Yellow Doll actually yielded melons, which is incredibly rare in Seattle. Flavor and color were great. Planted as starts in raised bed in mid-June and kept under cloche until flowering. Yield might be increased with slightly earlier planting and with addition of some heat-retaining elements in bed.

Vey dependable and prolific. Hard to tell when ripe early on.
