Yields vary from year to year, but are always high and occasionally unbelievable. We use Kennebecs for french fries (excellent) but find them exceedingly bland for all other purposes. |

These work well in Ontario as well. They tend to grow large (and digging them makes you feel like a good gardener). I have had them store nicely in the cold cellar until June. I think I could get even bigger ones if my soil wasn\'t quite so clayish. |

Kennebec was the first potato i ever grew. In very average soil, I produced a good yield, of medium to large spuds. Kennebec also has an excellent taste. |

Vigorous plants and good yields of medium to large potatoes. Thin skin tends to turn pale green when exposed to any sunlight, so they must be stored in the dark at all times. Very good flavor. Blue ribbon winner at several local fairs. |

The standard white potato for the south. Been growing them since the 50's when they replaced the Irish cobbler. A good general purpose potato that can be used as a baker. The tubers are large and elongated and have very shallow eyes. A pretty carefree plant, widely adapted. Have grown it in several locations in Virginia and here in Georgia. |

In 2007 grew Kennebecs from my own saved tiny seed potatoes (I know they say you shouldn't, but I don't do this every year). Beautiful plants and free from Colorado Potato Beetles for some reason this year. Other years we were inundated. We made a mistake in harvesting. Thinking the potatoes would just sit there after the vines died down, we waited a bit too long and many of them were turning soft and sprouting! You live and learn. We got some nice potatoes anyway. Kennebecs have nice crispy off-white interiors and smooth thin skin with relatively few eyes. They keep well - we keep them in the fridge because we don't really have any other cool dark place (some people swear refridgerating them ruins the taste, but we haven't noticed this). Great tasting and a good all-purpose potato. Nice realiable potato for this area. Lots of people plant them. Oh, and they get to be a fair size too. |

This has been our staple white fleshed, non russet potato for years.
It's hard to ask more of a potato than that it be easy to germinate, easy to grow, drought tolerant, of good size for both use and sale, dependably high yielding, with good storage capability, versatility of use and decently tasting. The Kennebec is all these. The taste is good but not exceptional, in my opinion.
If I were to grow only one potato and it might mean the difference between eating and going hungry, this is the one that I would plant. |
