Shepody is a very popular and widely grown potato for the frozen french fry market. It will rarely be found for sale in supermarkets or even at farm stands. It is a cross between Bake-King and F58050 released in Canada in 1980. It's claim to fame is that in 1985, McDonald's approved the use of Shepody for its highly regarded frozen french fries. Because it matures early, Shepody fills the processing plants when Russet Burbank, McDonald's first choice, is not available. It is a fine potato for the table so long as one enjoys a dry mealy potato. For a while, Monsanto attempted to market a GMO version: The NewLeaf™ Shepody. It was released in 1999 and after being soundly rejected in the marketplace, it was withdrawn in 2001 and is no longer being grown commercially. However, the natural Shepody remains a very popular frozen french fry potato.
