I grew Rose this year along with Brandywine, and Brandywine Suddeth strain to compare taste and productivity. We recieved over thirty inches of rain between mid May and the end of September with over eleven inches in August alone but Rose produced wonderfully. Rose, in my garden, grew quite tall. The initial tomatoes were a bit funky in shape and imperfect until later in the season. Rose then produced well and they were much more uniform in shape and size. Most of the tomatoes I picked were around one pound and the flavor was outstanding. It is a bit firmer than the Brandywines and they hold better. Everyone I gave tomatoes to raved about the flavor and asked for them. Rose outproduced Brandywine, Brandywine Suddeth, by two to three times with much better fruit quality than the Brandywines. I averaged forty-six per plant in a most difficult growing season.

This variety grows bushy and tall. I did not get very many, but it is the most beautiful looking, meatiest, and tastiest tomato in my opinion. The color is a deep pink, almost red. I\'m only giving it 4 stars because it did not produce that many for me.

I have grown both Rose and Brandywine under same conditions with same organic fertilizer and soli ammendments - I prefer the Rose to the Brandywine as better tasting - meatier and firmer than Brandwine - I have grown several strains of Brandywine - of them the Red, Landis, OTV , pink Suddeth and yellow and yellow platfoot - of all of the Brandywines the OTV and platfoot do better in the yield and I have still not had them do as well as the Rose

Last year was the first year that I planted this one. I only grew 2 plants, but it was enough for my family of five (we eat a lot of cherry and paste tomatoes also). I liked the fact that the fruit was much smoother than a Brandywine, but I'm not sure that the flavor was just as good. Close, but not quite there. The plant was easy to grow from seed, and did nicely all the way up to frost. I did prune the plants and flowers in July just to get the last of the green tomatoes to ripen. Leave enough space around this one; it grows quite fat in the tomato cages.

Of all the Heirloom beefstake/main crop type tomatoes we have tried, the Rose has performed the best in our garden. Started seeds with mycorhizal fungus inoculant for first time with excellent results. Transplanted Rose seedlings into garden on 5/9/07. First flush was picked for markert on 7/18/07. The Rose tomato produces huge 2-3 pound fruits, if staked and pruned. Excellent rich juicey tomato Has 2-3 productive flushes in July and August. So it's best to do two plantings if you want Rose tomatoes in September. Not as pretty as Brandywine or Pruden's Purple but impressive looking nonetheless. Seems to cross easily with the Italian Heirloom and other oxheart tomatoes. So will require some isolation if you want to seed save.

My original seed came from Johnny's and it is one of my favorites as it is not mushy like Brandywine. In that you have to realize this is a sweet fruity tomatoe in a class by itself. The tomatoes consistantly with watering will 5 to 6 inches across. The plants are big and heavy regular leaf. It is a later tomatoe which never cracked for me and it was always a perfect fruit. My "problem" with it is that it is not what I think is a tomatoe flavor like a Big Boy or Azoychka in being acidic. For those who want though a tomatoe like this it is perfect. I just grow it as an accent change of pace like one switches from Fireside apples to a Prairie Spy as one is sweet and the other is more light apple flavor.

This is my most favorite variety, and one that I feel is a must for my garden every year. It is every bit as productive as the commercial hybrids, better than some. It's a late tomato, but once it starts, it loads up with fruit, even during the worst heat of the summer, and it keeps going and going until frost. The plant is a huge monster of a plant. The tomatoes are nice-sized, approx. 1 pound. Some are larger, some are smaller. The flavor is excellent! It reminds me very much of Brandywine, but is so much more productive.

Disappointed. Nothing like Brandywine. Smaller toms with average taste. Low production.

We prefer Rose to Brandywine. The fruits tend to be smoother. Some of the heirlooms are just too uneven in ripening and gnarly, but Rose has the good taste quality of an heirloom without being too weird. Huge fruit are great for slicing in sandwiches.

Great heirloom with large fruit and excellent flavor. Fruit have a tendency to crack and mice seem to prefer it over other tomatos. If flavor is what you want give it a try.
