I have grown several named cultivars (presently available from none of the sources listed), with very mixed results. They do poorly here direct-seeded, so my best success with them has been as transplants. "Tarkara Early" (originally from Johnny's, since dropped) did quite well, maturing completely in under 100 days; it is a true bush habit w/ over 1 ounce of red seed per plant @ 6" spacing. "Buff" (from Yuko's Seeds, Canada) had a higher yield & slightly larger seed, but was much later @ 95 days. The purple-seeded "Murasaki" (also from Yuko) seems to offer a very high yield potential on sprawling plants, but may have some day-length sensitivity, and did not mature for me here even as a transplant. Personally, I prefer cowpeas to adzuki for use as dry beans; but for the bean paste used in Asian pastries, the bush adzuki varieties are easier to grow & harvest than the more sprawling green gram.

There are other dry beans that I much prefer and yield better.
