I\\\\\\\'ve grown these for a few years now. They produce three yields for me. The first is not much but the next two produce lots\\\\\\\'. They grow to 12 inches tall and usually start producing at 47 days. After the third harvest I cut them down and usually grow summer squash afterwards. I have had great success doing this.

Contender is a really nice tasting bean that produces even in adverse conditions. It's a fast producer that stays ahead of the Texas heat. I like to experiment with other beans, but the only one that has performed on par with Contender is Greencrop.

very prolific producer. only planted 3 sq ft for first planting. Was rewarded with 3 very large bowls of beans. They were tasty and tender.

Perfect all-around green bean. Tasty and easy to grow, these were the favorite item in our garden this past year. They blanche and freeze very well, and made our traditional holiday green bean casseroles taste amazing!

Stringless beans, average production, average flavor, really nothing special, probably will not be planting these after I run out of seed. I bought a big bag.

It's been a long while since I recall trying another variety of snap bean. This one has my vote as the best one to plant in our Louisiana climate. It's a heavy producer with excellent flavor and texture. It also freezes well. I usually will pick 3, maybe 4 times from the row during a 10-day to 2 week interval. So if I'm wanting a continuous harvest then I'd have staggered plantings. Otherwise, it's into the freezer they go.

I thought these were excellent all around, and will definetly grow more of these next year. Very productive, very tasty, very pretty with the mottled look, although my husband kept apoligizing to customers for the defect. NOT. And they performed even in our cool weather.

One of the best southern style beans. Excellent flavor, great production, and visually appealing. I have grown them from Virginia to Georgia and they are always dependable. Flavor is probably best suited to traditional southern stringbeans. (boiled with hamhocks, new potatoes)

Contender is one of those "beany" beans - the kind you pick when the beans have started to enlarge inside to cook with onions and maybe some potatoes and ham. It is not a delicately-flavored type. While this is not my favorite class of bean, I think Contender is fine for its class. My in-laws love it, including for canning. The big buff-colored seeds can go into the ground quite early in the bean season, start bearing early and continue bearing for weeks if conditions are suitable. They are quite heat tolerant, and beans remain tender when temperatures are in the high nineties here. On the other hand, the pods become disagreeably fibrous when they size up in chilly fall weather. Even when fibrous, pods don't develop real strings. Many "beany" beans have strings. So this bean is a good choice for those in hot-summer climates who want old-time flavor without stringing beans. Pods should be picked while still slender when the weather is cool. They sometimes develop purple brush-marks. Contender was developed in the Southeast. If you live in a cool-summer area, you may wish to choose another early bean - maybe Provider or Bountiful, or one of the purple bush beans, none of which perform well here when the weather heats up.
