In our area I started the seed in pots in mid April and then set out the plants in early May. Though this is a little more work it is well worth the effort. The plants produced an abundance of big beautiful beans before the fall frost.

Planted in 2007 by a big trellis simply made of steel fense posts and old wire fencing. These were the best limas we have grown. Sweet, nutty HUGE beans taste almost like chestnuts! Got quite a lot of Mexican bean beetle damage. But the large pods protect the beans which are a pleasure to shell. Very easy to blanch and freeze too. We have grown Fordhook, Jackson Wonder, Thorogreen Early, and Burpees Improved, but King of the Garden was by far the best for us.

I've raised these in So California where they never died off and just started producing more beans when the next spring started to warm up, and in Southern Oregon where I have to start them either indoors or with a soil warming cable. This is one crop I do whatever it takes to get it going in time for our shorter Oregon growing season. We love the taste, they are a very large bean and very prolific. We have perminent 10 foot poles and they grow well over the top.

I have grown this in both SoCal & Wisconsin; although it is only marginally reliable here, it is the only large-seeded pole lima that has succeeded here _at all_. For flavor as a butterbean (picked green-ripe), I consider it one of the best, with a sweet honey-like flavor & smooth texture. The vines are fairly rampant, and require strong (and tall) support; and like most large limas, there are some difficulties with germination in cool soils. The yield can be quite high, but not as high as some... the small-seeded varieties like "Sieva" perform better in my Northern location.

A very large white lima, that yields reasonably well here. Yields are about half of that for the Calico lima. It is a white lima whose flavor is preferred by many folks. I prefer the baby limas, but usually grow some of these for folks who like them.
