French heirloom variety from the south of France. Vines produce 8 to 20 pound, flattened, and deeply ribbed fruit with a shape often likened to a wheel of cheese. The fruits start out green and become terra cotta color or a mottled terra cotta/green as they mature. About 130 to 140 days to maturity from seed, from transplant about 110. Also known as Muscat de Provence, Muscade de Provence, The Fairytale Pumpkin or Fairytale.

A beautiful heirloom pumpkin/winter squash! Very bright orange flesh is excellent for pies and freezing. They have a slightly spicy flavor - not overpowering, just pleasantly so. Size of the fruit is highly variable and they must be watched carefully during a wet fall. Get them off the vine before the stem pulls off of the fruit during a wet year (like 2008). If the stem pulls off, process the fruit immediately or you will lose it. Vines aren't as susceptible to squash bugs and vine borers. But, the vines CAN wonder quite a bit from their hill. |

First 1st year, planted one hill 6/15/07 in Philadelphia area produced one 35 lbs squash & one 10lbs, deer finished the vine off cutting off several small immature pumpkins. Planted in partial shade of tree probably got 6-7 hours of sun. The pumpkins were beautiful and will try again next year in better location. The pumpkins are dense and meaty with just a few seeds. Excellent mild sweet flavor and texture for soup and pies. Canned well. No squash bug problems. No mildew whatsoever even when other winter squash vines were heavily mildewed. Slow growing but vigorous vine trailing as far as 12 feet from hill once it gets going. |
