Like most lettuces, Bronze Arrowhead does well in the cooler months (in fact, we have picked this variety as late as December 10). However, it does tend to handle warmer weather well and it holds in the field. That makes this variety one of our early summer (last June/early July, late August/early September) lettuce crops. Nice looseleaf that has varying degrees of red/bronze coloration dependent on the weather during its growth. Taste is variable, with a stronger taste in summer months that many (but not all) persons will appreciate. If you cut it just above ground level, it will grow back. Second flush of leaves will not 'head' and has a stronger taste. But, if you want to extend your lettuce season without multiple plantings, this will do the trick. this lettuce also holds well in the cold. We're still harvesting in a high tunnel (unheated) after temps that have not exceeded 0 degrees F for a couple of days. The trick is that you need to harvest when temps go over freezing in the tunnel (a sunny day). Taste is markedly sweeter in cold weather and perfectly fine in summer.

Our favorite leaf lettuce. Looks great with Simpson. The leaves are long, can be 4" x 8" triangular, deeply-cut bronze fading to pale green in the center. Plants 11" across and larger. Slow to bolt, but we do have cool weather. They are never bitter! We had a delicious salad on 9/13 made from little Bronze Arrow leaves growing up plant stocks that have gone to seed! We put out several lettuce varieties as plants in the early spring then interplant with Black Seeded Simpson and Bronze Arrow seeds.
