I direct seed these in my garden. They produce most years just before frost, so they are not as sweet as they might be if the growing season was a few weeks longer. The fruit stores for a long time!

Such a GREAT watermelon! I know the trend is towards small and seedless icebox types, but this big momma (30.8 lbs for our first one) reminds me of those huge old fashioned watermelons from my childhood. Seeds? Sure - but every kid should have the pleasure of a seedspitting contest. Sweet sweet sweet.; succulent, fast gowing and trouble free. The vines are pretty plants in themselves. We grew these in our front flower beds and had watermelons growing down our front steps and in the driveway!

It's a great melon if your garden is large enough to dedicate space for 50ft melon vines.

This was the most popular shipping melon in the 60's. It was replaced by the Crimson Sweet, which is better tasting melon. Markets also preferred the smaller size as the Charleston Grey is best when it is 25 lbs or better. It does not size down well. If crowded to grow smaller melons, the quality diminishes. It is still a good melon, vigorous, and productive. Taste wise it is as good or better than melons in its age group. The newer Crimson Sweet, Allsweet and their derivatives are better tasting.

I have had better success with this watermelon than any other. In my opinion the taste and texture are unsurpassed. The flesh is always crisp and sweet. If there is a better watermelon out there, I'd love to try it.
