I have very good results with this melon. But I have not tried the Early Sugarshaw. It performs well in this part of Georgia and the flavor is very good.

It produces very large melons - I weighed one at 12 pounds. It produces better in some years than others - it may be my methods are not consistent. It's very sweet and has a flavor that I think is delicious and distinctly different from a cantaloupe. As it gets very hot (100 degrees), the tops sometimes get some sunburn, but those are usually the last melons of the year. Seems resistant to most of the diseases around here.

This melon performed very well for us years ago in the intermountain west, with flavor superior to most cantaloupes. But flavor was not nearly as good as Early Sugarshaw hybrid in the Central Valley of California, where we have protracted temperatures above 100 degrees. Both melons are large, with characteristic Crenshaw flavor. Burpee Early Hybrid is sometimes a little on the mealy side. The stems of both these early-ripening hybrids slip when ripe. Burpee Early Hybrid Crenshaw should be compared with Early Sugarshaw Hybrid in short-season areas where fruits ripen in cool weather. Vines did not stand up to insect and/or disease pressure as well as Early Sugarshaw after the first flush of melons were harvested here, but this may not be an issue where the season is shorter. I have only grown them side-by-side in California.

Can be very, very good, but hard to get that good one.
