Ive planted these two years running I get many very small melons softball size. The vines seamed to branch out in all directions taking over a the ground. The melons never did mature and were always hard flesh and not sweet. Fool me twice shame on me. |

From 2 plants I got about 4-5 small melons. 2 of them rotted on the ground. 2 of them had bad spots. I cut it away and the remainder were still very sweet and excellent tasting. They're definitely worth planting again, but because of their susceptibility to damage, will next time try placing more straw under the melons to protect them from rotting. I previously used grass clippings, which doesn't provide enough support or protection. |

The Eden's Gem Melons that I grew from heirloomseeds.com were softball sized green netted melons with a gold lining in the seed cavity. They yield well in that they are early and each vine easily produces 5-8 melons over the course of my long season, but they are so tiny and with only about 3/4" of flesh. They are very much a personal melon. The taste was wonderful and they were easy to grow in a drought in thick clay soil. I would definately grow these with children since they mature relatively quickly and are perfectly sized for a child's hand. |

Ther are several variations of this cultivar. The old Netted Gem is a small (fist sized)green fleshed melon with a unique flavor. The Rocky Ford Green flesh is a larger melon with less of a nutmeg taste. Before the
hybrids took over, folks would demand the Rocky Ford gold lined. Green flesh but a yellow lining of the seed cavity. |
