I started growing this melon in Virginia in the 60's from Willhite seed. It is a green fleshed melon. It grew well on black plastic in Virginia and in the open field here in Georgia. It requires a bit more effort here because it has a soft thin dark green rind. It is very susceptible to sunscald and must be protected. I usually cover the maturing exposed melons with pinestraw. The soft rind also makes it very vulnerable to many critters from Box turtles to slugs. The pickleworms love them, so I have to get them early or not all.

I purchased "Botanical Interests" seed of "Ha-Ogen", which I believe is similar or identical to "Haogen". Other vendors sell "Ogen", which also appears to be similar or identical. The melons I grew (and others I have seen described under these names) were not orange-fleshed, though they have a little pink or orange coloration near the seed cavity. This is a small green-fleshed melon with a smooth, gold-green rind which has prominent green ribs. It does have a spicy flavor, as described. It also has quite a bit of aroma. Though another review warns that the melon will fail in 100-degree plus weather, this was not my experience in Central California. Humidity is not a problem for melons here, and I don't know if heat with humidity is a problem elsewhere. This melon was very productive for me, particularly for an open-pollinated melon, and bore over a prolonged period even when high temperatures were above 100 degrees for several days (though it does cool off quite a bit at night here most of the time). Though the variety was developed in Israel, it reportedly has antecedents in the American Southwest. I found the melons to have an interesting, distinctive flavor, but the texture was a little softer than I like. Still, I will grow it again for its flavor. It is an easy melon to grow, and more forgiving of watering as the melon nears ripeness than many other varieties (though the melon may slip off the vine a little earlier than it would under drier conditions, and be a little less flavorful). I found it to be superior to the hybrid green-fleshed melon "Passport", which gets good reports from people in cooler climates. I much prefer it to honeydew melons, which generally have a less complex flavor. And we live in a prime honeydew-growing area. I like melons that slip when ripe like this one does. This cultivar may also develop small cracks near the stem attachment when the melon is ripe, but these do not affect quality.

It might seem strange I would rate this melon as a 5 overall as I do not like the spicey flavor of it, but others just might. It produced well enough, but does not like very high 100 plus temperatures as it will fail in them. It is a nice melon though which is sweet with a nice firm, but soft enough flesh to eat with a spoon. I got my seed from Hutterites and will grow again to keep my seed, but will only use this as a change of pace melon as I just didn't appreciate the spicey flavor.
