A.k.a. Black Gram, Vigna mungo. Bush habit, but somewhat sprawling plants. Bright yellow flowers in racemes. The small pods develop in clusters of 4-6 (sometimes more) and turn black when dry. They contain 6-9 seeds that I would call \'powder black\', since the texture of the black seed coat makes it appear to be coated with powder. The small pods were difficult to find in the dense foliage; this might be better grown in areas where the climate is dry, and the whole plant can be pulled for harvest. The yield was fairly small for the space occupied. I do not know the traditional recipes for this, and tried it as a substitute for green gram in soup... I found the cooked taste & texture unappealing.
