I have now grown these twice, and I get more and more impressed with them. Like many rambly bush beans, they need to be kept well weeded and the grass around them well trimmed to avoid the pods staying wet and rotting. Other than that though, they are extremely tolerant and easy going plants. The yield is very decent for a bush bean. They are also ready in a shorter season than any other bean I have tried. We planted them very late this year - mid July! - and although the yield was smaller than it was last year when they were planted at a more normal time, it was probably at least 80% of what we got then. When the days got shorter, the plants responded by aborting new pods and insufficiently developed beans and concentrated on ripening what was far enough along to make it - an excellent trait for short seasons and second plantings! The beans cook up darker than you might expect and are like a large slightly blond kidney bean once cooked. These will be a standard item for us. UPDATE 2013: Good resistance to anthracnose.

One has to remember these beans have been taken out of their original Dakota habitat for generations and upon being returned they did not perform very well in South Dakota in dry conditions with heat. They may do well in other more wet regions like Ohio, but my plants did not live up to expectations. I will continue to Dakotaize them as I did get enough seed in very hot dry conditions in 2006 to hopefully awaken their best qualities. They do though produce a nice medium size yellowish bean of about 5 to a pod, but never equalled anything like the commercial soybeans farmers grew in the fields. Heirlooms change when taken to fertile regions.
