This variety pales in every comparison to Green Magic or Emerald Pride for the spring crop. Heads are irregular in size, shape and maturity, lack flavor and do not freeze well.

Love, love, love this broccoli. Modest main shoots followed by side shoots sometimes into December here (albeit pea-sized by then). That\'s saying a LOT in this short growing season. We have raised beds, and the plants fit the scale of our operation. This year was extremely wet, and we are losing some lower leaves due to a leaf spot, but so far, so good.

Have grown Packman for several years and have had great results here in S.E. Texas.Great steamed or raw in salads. As noted it will produce side shoots afther the main head has been harvested. This year it is coming in between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I live in Rochester and have had at least 2 crops per week of this wonderful broccoli from 10 plants since July --it is now Nov and it is going strong! The main plants were wonderful, but the side shoots are the real treat. They are tender and sweet. The plants are robust, about 2ft tall with stems about 1.5 inches in diameter. I started from seed at the start of March in my home and transplanted first week in May/end April. I planted in a blend of half compost/half topsoil. This was about 8" on top of rototilled topsoil (about 3") in a dense topsoil/clay area. The broccoli are still bearing veggies as of Nov 14 after several frosts in the 20's. I love this plant and will put more in next year. It was especially nice with nasturtiums planted in the garden as they started to overgrow a bit -- a charming site, and kept some of the bugs to a minimum. Packman is great eaten raw and also steams up nicely. We blanch it and pack in vacuum sealed plastic bags in the freezer for winter.

First year I planted broccoli. Planted 4 from the six pack in my new Square Foot Garden (Mel Bartholemew's soil-less mix) and 2 in potting soil in a 1/2 barrel. The 4 in the mix grew wonderfully. I harvested 4 huge heads about 40 days after planting them. I continue to get golfball size shoots off the side. They have the juiciest stems I have ever tasted. My 3 y/o grandsons eat the side shoots right out of the garden. I rinse my broccoli in cold salted water for about an hour. I chop it up in a cake pan and put alittle butter and kosher salt on it. Broil it for about 5 minutes.... nummy! The remaining 2 in the barrel did not so well. Grew to about 10 inches tall, got a golfball size (maybe) main shoot. No side shoots. Highly recommend gardening the Square Foot way!

Planted here in SW VA in early March. Tiny heads bolted very quickly. The heads and shoots were tiny and not very tasty. Wasn't worth the trouble to plant.

Bought a six pack and these brocs went to town, consistently producing side shoots, although in hot weather, they bolted. We cut them constantly and even after some flowered, they went right back to chugging out smaller side stems. Too bad they don't taste good, to sulfur-y for me.

Depending on the heat, Packman either does very well in our spring garden, or it buttons up promptly. When it isn't affected by early heat, it does well, forms good sized heads and side-shoots like crazy. We also plant it in the fall garden, where it does well consistently.

This cultivar performs well here as a spring crop. I like Superdome and Galleon better, but this one is readily available as plants, when I run short of my own plants. Does have more tendency to browning of the heads as hot weather hits. Not the greatess but good.
