Tough to grow well. Don't overfertilize or they won't yield. I put good compost in the hole but don't topdress until they start to set fruit. Best on soil that hasn't grown tomatoes for a few years. My overall favorite. Have grown it for close to 10 years now.

I agree with "danceswithferrets" comment that this is the same tomato as Brandywine. I LOVE this tomato for everything except making sauce becasue it is so juicy it takes forever to cook down into sauce. See my review of "Brandywine" I'm too lazy to type it again.

I do not like this tomatoe in flavor as it tastes like a musty old cellar to me and has creamy flesh which seems over ripe to me. My seed came from Johnny's and is Sudduth's strain. It produces nice large, deep milky red fruits which I had no problem with high heat in growing them nor in normal temperatures. Actually the higher heat made a better tasting tomatoe as it was not so musty flavored. Too many people buy into the seed company spin of "greatest flavor ever" and Brandywine is not. Some people might like it, but a tomatoe like Rose is 1000 times better in being fruity, sweet with a nice tomatoe flavor. If one likes acidic, Azoychka yellow or Big Boy open pollinated from Sand Hill Preservation Center are better tomatoes for tomatoe flavor. Brandwine grows well and is dependable, but it's flavor is not what the groupies claim.

The Brandywine has sufficient disease resiatnce to grow here. It does produce a huge vine (10-12 ft) but less than a dozen tomatoes per vine. Fruits are large and about as smooth as beefsteak types get. Taste is good, but it is certainly not the the best tasting pink beefsteak type that I have eaten. The Giant Belgium is also a low yielder but it beats the Brandywine in every category for me.

This is the same as just Brandywine. This one is listed twice. Flavor is excellent, production not so much. Plant this one as early as possible, as it will not set fruit when it gets hot.
