This year I planted Blue Coco, Marvel of Venice, and Purple Podded Pole in a row. We had a cold summer. The Blue Coco germinated before the others. The Marvel of Venice and Purple Pod made hardly any beans. The Blue Coco has a ton. The plants are very large with big leaves. The deep indigo pods are much larger than the Purple Pod. They also are flatter, not round, like the Purple Pods are. These are the best-tasting pole beans I have ever grown. When the beans start swelling in them, they are still good to eat without getting tough, although they start to develop small strings. I am not sure if they did so well because of the cool summer, but I am definitely growing them again.

I garden in inland Southern California: very early prolonged heat. Blue Coco bears in the heat; the pod has a beautiful purple color which turns green with cooking. It is a thick meaty bean rather than a skinny French green bean, but it will bear all summer, has good flavor/texture even when pods are big, and is very disease resistant. It comes true from seed. If you get the seed one year, save it because it can be hard to buy.
