I grew Gold Coin for the first time this year from seeds bought at Johnny's. Seeds were started in mib-Feb. here in CT, and transplanted in mid-May at a 4 inch spacing. They were well fertilized and well watered due to the abundant rain in the 2009 summer. Weeds were kept to a minimum, and I planted blocks of about 3 feet by ten feet of over 400 onion transplants. Harvest here in CT was early-mid August and many onions had not fallen over. There was a variety of sizes, from under 2 inch to over four inch in diameter. They are very flat onions, so don't expect huge round bulbs. These are very expensive onions in the markets, and definitely worth growing for the home or market grower. They are fairly mild soon after harvest, and will sweeten up even more, plus a good keeper. Extremely sweet when cooked, and a lot of recipies on the internet for these beauties. I have had a few with soft outer rings during sun drying. Worth your time!
