This one won't be back in my garden even though the seed was really cheap. The other varieties this year (Diplomat, Bay Meadows) looked better from the day they were set. This one grew less evenly, and the heads just looked second-rate (and yielded a lot less.) It was tough to sell at market with any other variety next to it, because the others look so much better. Granted some alternative customers prefer the funky ones.

Waltham 29 is a huge plant. Its not for those with a small garden. Its taste though is delicious.Better started indoors in winter and sat out as soon as possible in spring.Bugs eat it alive if it matures in early summer.

Planted from home raised transplants in an urban enviroment, around mid april.Plants were sturdy and hardy.Harvest began sometime in early june and lasted for around two weeks. The yeild was lower than I had expected. However the taste was execellent.I currently have a fall planting in the ground. This may make the difference. Our weather in central virginia in spring and early summer is rather erratic.I believe that may have lowered the yields. This variety isnt suitable for container or very small garden plots. The plants reach around three foot tall and two feet wide. You could compensate by planting other crops in between them though .Allowing those with small plots a chance at growing them.
