| This was the first kind of leek we ever grew and I have not found a better one. They are thick, tender and delicious, and will stand in the garden overwinter without any difficulty. Leeks in general are a time-consuming crop, and require some attention. We start them indoors in February, plant them out closely in late April or early May, and when they are a good solid foot high, around the beginning of July, they are moved to their final planting spot. We have a bed of thick, mucky clayish soil, in which we poke 8" deep holes with a broom handle. The leeks are dropped in, and watered well, but the holes not otherwise filled. This yields long, fat leeks. |
