My experience is with Cinese red and it is a truely beautiful and great tasting garlic. I first saw it pictured in a "coffe table" cook book and found it in Montreal market. Planted in mid-October and mulched with 2" of locust leaves and fertilized heavy. Sprouted in spring before all the other varieties (I grew 5 other hard neck varieties) but unfortunately did not keep growing strongly and only about half of the 90 cloves planted produced reasonably sized bulbs and more than a few were simply not vigorous enough to survive. Those that I harvested had an outer ring of 10-12 cloves and several rows of inner smaller cloves. This might be an excellent choice for zone 6 or higher such as on Long Island but my zone 5 appears to be too severe.
