Description: Herbaceous perennial. Common name coneflower. Echinacea x hybrida. Open pollinated. Echinacea is a genus of seven species all endemic to eastern and central North America. About 126 to 165 days to maturity. 2013 All American Selection. ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ was introduced by Kieft-Pro Seeds in 2012. It is a well-branched, sturdy coneflower that won the 2013 AAS (All-America Selections®) award and Europe's FleuroSelect Gold Medal award for garden performance. It flowers the first year in a wide range of bloom colors, including purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, cream or white ray flowers with a brown cone. It grows 2 to 2.5 ft. tall and 1 to 2 ft. wide.

The seeds from Cornell did not germinate so we ordered more from Johnnys. This second batch of seed took a long, long time to germinate and grow large enough to transplant into the garden bed. With patience, they matured into beautiful plants and gave us long lasting flowers. We did have some curious growth from the bottom of one of the plants. The leaf shape and venation were different than an Echinacea. We sent a sample to Cornell in Riverhead. They diagnosed broad mites and their eggs present, though not in high numbers. They also thought it was because of the hybridization of Cheyenne Spirit and perhaps another plant variety was showing itself - he thought it looked like Evening Primrose. Hmmm.
