The Red Sails Lettuce variety is a great lettuce. I wouldn\'t say that it\'s an exceptional variety, but it grows and produces well. While it is not the first lettuce in my garden to bolt in the late spring, it tended to be one of the earlier ones. But I did love the pops of color it gave to my lettuce containers and to garden to table salads.

This is the second year we planted it in our demonstration gardens. It is a fast grower and slower to bolt than other varieties.

One of the first really red lettuces to become common, and still one of the best. Not as dark as the newer red lettuces, but not as quick to become inedibly bitter either. This has not been the most robust lettuce for us, but it has been fine. Definitely one of our standard lettuces.

Nice color and survived heat. I liked the flavor and that it survived drought.

Easy variety to grow, but perhaps it was our fencing that kept the critters away. Slower to bolt than the black seeded simpson but VERY BITTER once it did. We cut back a couple of times and replanted twice. Great flavor when harvested young.

Nice lettuce to grow because of its contrast with other varieties. It was fast growing and slow to bolt. We were able to do a second planting.

Red Sails is pretty to grow. Nice contrast with green lettuce. Taste is good. Performed well, grew back quickly after being destroyed by unknown critters.

This lettuce was a vigorous grower in spite of the heat and drought conditions this year. A second planting was started in late July and germinated well. Compost was used to amend the soil before each planting. An attractive and tasty lettuce.

I\'ve raised Red Sails for three years. It grows well early, mid-season, and late and is slow to bolt. Leaves are attractively bronzed on the margins and quite tender, not crunchy like some lettuces. A pleasing characteristic is that it is quite frost resistant. Today (12/29/11) we had snow shower and three late Red Sails plants were dusted white but thriving while the two nearby Simpsons Curled were mere frozen mush.

I find that this grows very easily in early spring and all through the summer. I can plant this in the heat of July and it produces fantastically great. Great soft sweet lettuce.

I have had more problems with this lettuce than any other. Possibly because I gave it so many, many tries. It gets rave reviews, but it has never lived up to my most modest expectations. Red Sails has a higher juvenile mortality rate than the other lettuces, easily blown flat by rain or wind. I haven't got to the hoop-tunnel stage yet, and don't plan to, so Red Sails is out. I prefer hardier types of leaf lettuce. Also, it is not nearly as bolt-resistance as many of the claims would have it. Big thumbs down.

One of our favorites. Excellent yield, slow to bolt. Adds color and taste to salads. Seed is cheap at our local bulk seed dealer.

My favorite lettuce. I plant in succession all year long. We use it in salads and feed it to our tortoises. They love it too.
