Vigorous vines bear an average of 3-4 fruit per vine. Vines grow about 10 ft long in poor, high acid soil, and 20+ ft long in good composted manure. The main vine and each side shoot will generally produce no more than a single fruit. Unlike most of the C. moschata varieties which I have tried in my garden, this variety appears to like the long hot summer days, and as long as it is given adequate water, it can grow more than 1 ft per day on good days. No powdery mildew, and it appears somewhat resistant to downy mildew. Slugs and snails will eat this variety before they will dine on others (less spines on Really Big), so a good sprinkling of Sluggo every so often is recommended. Appears to resist seedling blights, and can be grown well even when direct seeded in poorly drained soil. Overall, a very healthy squash. Female flowers start blooming about 1 week before Early Butternut. Harvest, fruit shape and quality is about the same as Early Butternut, the main differences are vigor and fruit size (Really Big is larger). If one has the space for vigorous vines that will climb trees and fences, I would recommend this as a replacement to Early Butternut.
