USER ENTERED : This is a British heirloom which originated in Bath, England. It is a romaine (also referred to as "cos") type lettuce. It was introduced by the Goldring family and originally it was known as "Goldring's Bath Cos". It is very plain in appearance, a medium dark green with some very slight bronzing on the tips of the leaves. This variety is fairly cold hardy and stands out from most other lettuce varieties due to it's sweetness. There is no bitterness to it. Per the Adaptive Seeds website "it won an award of merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1923. The Henry Doubleday Research Association found it to have three times the Vitamin C as other lettuces."

USER ENTERED : Beautiful deep purple (very dark red), loose leaf. This is the darkest colored lettuce I have ever grown. It is quite sweet and delicious, mild tasting until mature when it bitters. It is slow to bolt. It is an easy grower. Looks/tastes great in the salad bowl! I plant this every year as it is one of my favorites. I have heard it can be more finicky to start than some other varieties in very cool or very warm weather. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, moderate climate and have never had an issue at all with starting it.
